learn to throw

Your journey into judo starts this August
LET'S GO!

How the course works

Learn to Throw is a three-week course designed specifically for adults with little or no experience in judo. The coaches will guide you step by step through the fundamental skills you need to feel confident on the mat.

Over three weeks, you’ll take part in six dynamic, coach-led sessions on Monday and Friday evenings. Each class lasts between 60 - 90 minutes, giving you seven and a half hours on the mat to build real skills and confidence. Designed as a fun and supportive introduction to judo, the course covers essential techniques such as safe falling, throwing and groundwork along with the key terminology used in the sport. You’ll receive expert guidance in a welcoming environment and a judo kit is included so you're ready from day one. By the end of the course, you should feel ready to transition into our regular adult classes and if you choose, even take your first grading.

WHere it began

Judo is a grappling martial art and an Olympic sport. It was the inspiration of Jigoro kano and was founded in Japan in 1882.

WAYS TO WIN

When you reach senior level judo, there are four ways to get a score in judo: throwing, hold-downs, armlocks and strangles.

THE SCORES

The ultimate score is an 'ippon'. This score would end a contest. Two 'wazaris' would also end the contest. A 'yuko' is the smallest score.

FAQ

Do you have some burning questions? Here's what most people ask before getting started.
Am i too old to start judo?
Not at all. Many of our senior members started judo in their 30s, 40s and 50s.
Do i need to be physically fit or strong before joining?
No. You don't need any level of fitness to begin. Judo naturally builds strength, balance and stamina the more you participate. The 'Learn to Throw' course is designed to ease you in gradually.
What should i bring to my first session?
A full judo gi is included in the price of the course. Arrive in comfortable clothing ie. leggings, shorts, t-shirt and these can be worn underneath your new gi.
What happens after the course?
When the course is finished, you will have the option to join our regular senior session.  These lessons are run on a Monday and Friday at our Surbiton Hub.
What facilities are at the venue?
Parking is available in the small car park and on the road. There are community toilets and a small kitchen in both halls to refill water.
